GUEST SPEAKER: YMSL Ashburn

Young Men’s Service League is a nonprofit organization that delivers more than 650,000 volunteer hours each year in the United States to more than 3,000 philanthropic partners. Members consist of Moms and their sons who spend time together growing relationships with others in their community through service. There are 170 chapters nationwide and ESSAY CURE was honored to be asked by YMSL Ashburn (Virginia) to speak at their February meeting.

YMSL dovetails nicely with ESSAY CURE’s coaching for students to “show me, don’t tell me.” College application essays shouldn’t talk about a student’s “passion” but rather describe what that passion led a student to do. Sometimes, the doing part is hard for students; they don’t know where to find opportunities in the Real World where they can roll up their sleeves and spend time doing what it is that feeds and develops their sense of self. Sometimes, finding this fit begins with doing something that’s not for them — and that’s okay! Getting out there, spending time in service to their community, and getting to know others is a great way to spend time in high school discovering things about that world that can lead to new interests.

Thank you, YMSL Ashburn Moms, for inviting me, welcoming me, and all that you do for your families and our community!
